The ASSC welcomes members and non-members to participate in workshops and classes. All classes are held at the A.J. Ottewell Community Centre in Sherwood Park.


Take the next step in your artistic journey! ASSC offers many online and in person workshops. You can explore a range of classes from drawing and painting in all mediums to developing style and process. Whether you’re looking for art workshops for beginners or you’re already an experienced artist, you can take your skills to the next level. All our classes and workshops are taught by talented artists and professionals, giving you opportunities to learn new techniques with new tools.

    WORKSHOP with CARLA LAM ..

    The Power of Play.  A workshop of Creative Exploration


    In this workshop we will explore your creative intuitions in a playful spirit. We will experiment with various tools and ideas to loosen up your mark-making to create small, layered abstract works on paper.  On day two you have the option to develop your work from day one in a larger format, and to incorporate collage. I will provide a demonstration, personal coaching and encourage the freedom to follow your own guidance. It’s preferred that participants use acrylic paints.  All levels of experience are welcome.

    WORKSHOP with FRANCIS MARTE - Realistic  Still Life with Glass & Lemons!

    Are you ready to advance your painting skills with watercolours? This is a two-day workshop is designed to

    explore various techniques for you to apply for similar future paintings. Guided by a reference photo, the

    instructor will demo step-by-step on how to achieve this hyperrealistic still life composition.

    During the first day of the workshop series, you will learn:

    1.How to choose a reference photo with a good composition

    2.How to trace or draw the reference photo on watercolour paper

    3.How to prep your painting – stretching paper perfectly, mounting paper on board and choosing

    the materials for mounting.

    4.How to analyze your reference photo to identify what techniques, colour pigments and other

    materials to use

    5.Materials list – the instructor will provide the recommended materials (paints, paper, brushes,

    palette, masking fluid, etc.) and explain the functions and properties of each material, and

    substitutes

    6.How to apply masking fluid

    7.How to mix various pigments with water to achieve interesting washes and textures

    8.How to paint a solid, dark background with multiple glazing, and identifying what colours to use

    9.How to paint wood and shadows

    10.How to pay attention to value and tone and compare with the reference photo

    During the second day of the workshop series, you will learn:

    1.How to paint the glass and learn splattering technique

    2.How to paint the first layers of lemon slices – identify what various pigments can be used and how

    to layer them using wet-on-wet technique

    3.How to paint the next layers of the lemon slices

    4.How to meticulously paint details

    5.How to lift pigments from the paper

    6.How to correct mistakes, check for accuracy, proper values and cleanliness

    Notes:

    The instructor has carefully timed this workshop with a half hour break at noon. A material list is in a

    separate document. Instructions for trace transferring the photo reference on the watercolour paper will

    be sent two weeks before the workshop starts. Students will bring the watercolour paper in class with the

    drawing on the paper ready. Students can also arrive 30 mins before to trace transfer, with instructor’s

    assistance. It is recommended that students gather around the instructor during demos, but the instructor

    will also walk around to check on students’ progress and answer questions.

    WORKSHOP WITH CRYSTAL DRIEDGER _ Textures in Colored Pencils

    Whether you're a beginner or have some experience with colored pencils, this four-week course will help you refine your skills in creating textures and light. Each week, we’ll focus on a new surface texture: smooth and reflective, Soft (feathers), fur/grass, and rough (bark/etc). Learn to use light, color, and texture without relying on chemical blenders, and discover techniques that bring more life and vibrance to your artwork. Coloured pencils are a versatile and beautiful medium, capable of producing archival-quality artwork that stands the test of time."

    WORKSHOP WITH TERRIE SHAW ..Collage & Mixed Media

    Learn how to create a collage with hand painted tissue papers, paint your abstract or impressionistic subject, (your subject can be portraits, landscapes or still life). The tissue papers are torn and applied to a canvas, next Terrie will teach you how to paint transparently on top of your collage with acrylic paint.

    Day one Painting Tissue Papers — have a fun filled day painting white tissue paper with fluid acrylics. Make your own stamps, create textures, watch your paint colours mingle into surprising shapes. Once the tissue papers are dry they will be applied on top of your canvas with matt medium.

    Day two Painting Transparent — with your choice of subject Terrie will inspire you and show you how to paint transparent on top of your collaged canvas.

    This workshop is for beginners to Advanced artists, there will be lots of demos and guidance.

    WORKSHOP with WILLIE WONG - Watercolors 

    “Watercolor for all levels”

    With easy to follow handouts, this course is designed to concentrate on painting rather than drawing. We all love shorts. We will be painting old cars, truck and landscape.

    WORKSHOP with  DAVID SHKOLNY - Pastels 

    .An introduction to soft (chalk) pastels where you will learn how to block in an initial sketch, followed by applying colour in various strokes with an understanding of value and colour temperature. A simple still life, followed by landscapes as well as the figure in a landscape setting.

    WORKSHOP with OKSANA ZHELISKO  ..Portrait in 4 Colors..Zorn Palette

    It is much easier to achieve a harmonious look to your painting if you learn to use just few colours and to blend them effectively. In this class you will use just four colours.

    The “Zorn Palette” refers to a palette of colours attributed to the great Swedish artist, Anders Zorn (18 February 1860 - 22 August 1920) The Zorn Palette comprises just 4 colours: yellow ochre, ivory black, cadmium red and titanium white. 

      

    In this class you will learn to:

    Gain greater balance in your portrait painting

    In this class you will learn to: 

    • Gain greater balance in your portrait painting
    • Create an easy colour harmony
    • Manage tone and composition 
    • Achieve more luminescence through colour mixing

    First day of the class will be focused on short exercises on painting eyes, nose and lips.

    On the second day we shall create a luminous portrait by using a Zorn Palette. Learning to work and extend these 4 harmonious colours to create glowing and enchanting skin tones. 

    The instructor will explain anatomy, make you aware of necessary details and show you practical techniques in her demonstrations.
