You can explore a range of classes from drawing and painting in all mediums to developing style and process. Whether you’re looking for art workshops for beginners or you’re already an experienced artist, you can take your skills to the next level. All our classes and workshops are taught by talented artists and professionals, giving you opportunities to learn new techniques with new tools.


The ASSC welcomes members and non-members to participate in workshops and classes. All classes are held at the A.J. Ottewell Community Centre in Sherwood Park.

    EXPLORATION  IN OILS OR ACRYLIC

    with MARGARET KLAPPSTEIN


    Intended as a beginning and intermediate approach to acrylics, we will cover the property of different kinds of acrylics and application plus some beginning elements of composition.  For most of the work we will try to use liquid acrylics to minimize the cost for beginners.  There is a list of basic colors listed on the supply list.

    SIMPLIFYING WHAT YOU SEE !! ...with CURTIS GOLOMB


    Simplifying What You See! 
    Covering the process of how to build a painting in acrylic. Aspects such as planning, correcting problem areas, applying glazes, creating the illusion of lots of color, managing values and working with shapes will be covered. 

    Each participant will also be provided a memory jogger for the workshop which outlines what was covered. Please note that this is a beginner level course that even individuals that have had experience painting could benefit by attending.

    BOOK BINDING with TERRIE SHAW


    Creating and binding your own book is quite exciting, Terrie’s step by step instruction makes the book binding process fun and easy. By the end of the workshop you will have created your own personal book along with many creative ideas, shared knowledge, and take home step by step directions.

    FACE SCULPTING with RYAN KURYLO

    Have a fun experience sculpting the human head with clay.  Using traditional pottery clay, you will be guided through the steps to create a half - life size, realistic human head.  Ryan’s low stress environment is great for beginners to experience clay sculpture for the first time or for portrait artists to sharpen their visual communication skills.  Learn how to create the human face with realism and style.  Sculpt shapes like eyes, ears, nose, mouth and hair are explored. This class will improve the skills of intermediate sculptors, and 2D artists alike.  Bring home your sculpture to air dry, or fire and glaze in a pottery kiln to create a true masterpiece.

                       GESTURE (FIGURE) SCULPTING with RYAN KURYLO


    Unlock your creatvity and bring your emotions to life with our Figure Gesture Sculpting Workshop! In this hands-on environment, you’ll learn the fundamentals of expressive figure sculpting using professional materials and techniques, including building a wire armature and clay maquette. Using a live model as reference, Ryan will guide you through the process of creating fast expressive, dynamic sculptures inspired by the human form and movement. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to refine your skills, explore new techniques, and connect with other creatives. Join us for a fun and engaging experience that will take your figurative art to the next level! Take home your plasticine maquette to pose on your shelf or use for further study.

    DIVING DEEPER INTO VISUAL COMPOSITION 

    with Rick Rogers

     Composition is simply the organization of the different elements of your artwork to create a work of art that matches your vision.  It sounds so easy until we dive in.  This workshop will provide you with tools to improve your understanding and recognition of composition strategies in your work.   Experience level: From intermediate to experienced artists.
